Winter Tires vs. All-Season Tires

posted on

With winter just around the corner, most of us need to consider the condition of our tires and what is going to be the best tire choice for the winter roads.  With so many different tire options, it’s easy to get confused and wonder, what really is the best tire for my needs?  A common dilemma is winter tires versus all-season tires. What is the best choice and what is the difference?

Winter Tires in OhioWhen considering your tire options you need to determine what kind of driving you will do and how much you want to invest in tires. I winter tire is a must for drivers who know snow and ice will be a major part of their winter commutes. In Ohio, there is no doubt we need to look into our tire options.

Winter tires are made to handle snow, ice, and wet conditions.  It all comes down to the tread and softer rubber. Winter tires have cuts in the rubber, known as sipes.  These cuts make up what we call tire tread and are designed to move water off the road surface, provide more grip, and cut into the snow.  The rubber is also going to be softer on a winter tire allowing for more give and more grip to the road surface.

In snow, winter tires are going to give you more traction more stability and more stopping power than all-season tires, but all season tires give you a wider range of benefits.  Not only do they perform well in snow but they also perform well in dry conditions. Making them a well-rounded tire. No pun intended.

All-Season Tires have a moderate tread depth that reduces noise while driving on dry roads. They also have harder rubber that can extend tread life.  Unlike the softer rubber of winter tires, the all-season tread will wear down more gradually and last longer.

Winter tires could be a solid option for your driving needs. Most motorist will have a set of winter tires and only use them during the snow months.  This eliminates the concern of tread wear because you will only use the tires seasonally.  However if your area only gets occasion snow or hardly any ice, an all-season tire could provide a tire for the whole year. No matter what tire you choose always have them installed by a reputable auto shop.
