12 Things You Didn't Know About Independence Day

posted on
Hot dogs, parades, fireworks, BBQ and the kickoff of summer…that’s what most people think of when it comes to July 4. However, even if you’re an aficionado of American history, there might be some facts about Independence Day that you didn’t know! At Boyd’s Tire & Service Center, we’d like to list off some July 4 factoids that you may or may not have been aware of:

  1. The Declaration of Independence was actually signed on July 2, 1776; it was revised somewhat, and the edited version was not ratified by Congress until two days later.
  2. The longest-running Independence Day celebration in the United States is Bristol, Rhode Island’s 4th of July Parade; it was started back in 1785.
  3. The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson and signed by 56 other men from the colonies; John Hancock’s signature was so oversized and flamboyant that it left little room for the others.
  4. “Yankee Doodle” was sung by British military officers in pre-Revolutionary days as a taunt, mocking the poorly-organized colonists who helped them fight the French and Indian Wars.
  5. The Declaration of Independence became the template for similar documents in France, Russia, Poland, Greece and several South American states.
  6. While Francis Scott Key penned the Star Spangled Banner during the War of 1812, it wasn’t officially declared as the national anthem until 1931.
  7. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and James Monroe all died on July 4; Jefferson and Adams died within hours of each other in 1826, while Monroe died five years later.
  8. The Philippines and Rwanda both observe July 4th as days of liberation.
  9. While the Liberty Bell hasn’t been rung since 1846 (avoiding any further cracking or damage), it is tapped ceremonially 13 times on each July 4.
  10. While John Adams and Thomas Jefferson pushed for the bald eagle as the national bird, Benjamin Franklin advocated the turkey instead.
  11. Two great American icons of liberty were actually made overseas; the Liberty Bell was cast in England, while the Statue of Liberty was a gift from France.
  12. Americans put away around 155 million hot dogs on Independence Day alone, and the American Pyrotechnics Association estimates that Americans are ooh’d and aah’d by over 14,000 professional fireworks displays every July 4th.
