Hydroplaning happens when a layer of water comes between your tires and the road, causing your vehicle to actually float on top of the water. During this time, you may lose total control of steering, and in turn, the car. Hydroplaning usually causes the steering wheel to jerk and pulls the vehicle towards the puddle of water.

One of the things you can do to prevent your vehicle from hydroplaning is to regularly inspect your tires.

1.       Make sure your tires are properly inflated. When your tires are over or under inflated, hydroplaning becomes more likely.

2.       Check the tread on your tires to make sure they are not balding. As your tread wears down so does your traction, making it easier to lose control. The primary purpose of your tire’s tread is to channel water away from the tire, so when the tread is worn down, it cannot prevent a wedge of water from building up in front of the tire.
